The most important sustainable event in the city has already the confirmation of 36 Mayors and city representatives from the largest cities in the planet. C40 Sao Paulo Summit – a conference that brings mayors together to tackle climate change and promotes sustainable development – will take place for the first time in a South Hemisphere city and will put Sao Paulo in the center of global environmental issues.

C40 Brazilian city members, such as Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba, will integrate the Latin American representatives from Buenos Aires, Bogotá, Caracas and Santiago that confirmed participation at the event. From USA, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle will also have representatives in the summit. The Mayor of New York City and Chair of the C40, Michael Bloomberg, will attend the opening ceremony hosted by Mayor of Sao Paulo Gilberto Kassab.

“We are aware of our duty to contribute to disseminating sustainable practices and we take this commitment very seriously. The participation of mayors from the largest cities in the world in this event is fundamental to exchange information and experiences in dealing with climate change”, says Mayor Kassab.

From Europe, cities such as Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Basel, Berlin, Copenhagen, Heidelberg, London, Madrid, Moscow, Rotterdam and Warsaw will be represented in the event. From Asia, Changwon and Seoul, both South Korean cities, Hong Kong (China), Jakarta (Indonesia), and Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam), are also part of the confirmed guests. The Mayor of Sidney (Australia), and the Mayor of Addis Ababa, (Ethiopia), will also attend the C40 Sao Paulo Summit.

Event Program – Sao Paulo City Hall, responsible for the event, has just announced the summit program in June 1st and 2nd at the Sheraton Sao Paulo WTC Hotel, where the event will take place. In 20 sessions divided in two days, speakers will address important urban challenges such as Energy Efficiency in Existing Buildings, Tree Planting & Urban Forestry, Integrated Waste Management, Compact Cities, Green Taxis, City Congestion Charge, Urban Drainage and Adaptation, Landfill Gas Capture & Energy Generation, and Green Industry Investment.

ABOUT C40 - The C40 Large Cities Climate Summit is a conference that brings together, every two years, mayors from all over the world to discuss actions and practices in combating climate change. The C40 was created in 2005 in London and its main goal is to deliver international cooperation between large cities to reduce greenhouse gas emission and to promote best practices between public and private institutions for tackling global warming.

In 2006 a partnership was established with Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI), a foundation created by former president Clinton. The C40 Steering Committee is formed by the cities of Sao Paulo, Delhi, Berlin, Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles, New York, Toronto and Tokyo. The group is responsible for all C40 activities and international strategies.

In June 2008, with the support of the city of Sao Paulo, the Mayor of Toronto, David Miller, was elected chair of the C40 climate leadership group, succeeding Ken Livingstone, former Mayor of London. Last November, with the support of São Paulo once again, the Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, was elected the new chair of the committee.

The C40 Sao Paulo Summit is one of the targets included in the 2012 São Paulo’s Agenda.
